The Bolivian Ram (Mikrogeophagus altispinosus) is a captivating freshwater fish that adds a vibrant touch to any aquarium. These enchanting cichlids, hailing from the serene waters of the Amazon River basin in South America, are renowned for their stunning array of colors and their generally peaceful demeanor.

Their appearance is truly mesmerizing. Unlike many other fish, Bolivian Rams boast a remarkable diversity in coloration. While some individuals may exhibit a predominant golden hue, others may display striking shades of blue or even vibrant reds. These base colors are further enhanced by intricate patterns and markings, creating a unique and captivating appearance for each individual fish. The males often exhibit more pronounced coloration, showcasing their vibrant hues more vividly.

Beyond their visual appeal, Bolivian Rams possess a certain charm in their behavior. They are generally peaceful and social fish, making them suitable companions for a wide range of other peaceful aquarium inhabitants. However, it's important to remember that even these generally placid fish can exhibit territorial tendencies, particularly during breeding season. To minimize any potential aggression, it's advisable to keep them in pairs or small groups within the aquarium, providing ample space and hiding places for each individual to establish its own territory.

Key Characteristics:

  • Size: They typically reach a maximum size of around 2.5-3 inches (6.5-7.5 cm).
  • Coloration: Their most striking feature is their vibrant coloration, which can vary depending on the specific strain. Common colorations include gold, blue, and red hues, often with intricate patterns and markings.
  • Temperament: Bolivian Rams are generally peaceful and social fish, making them suitable for community aquariums. However, they can exhibit some territorial behavior, especially during breeding season. Keeping them in pairs or small groups can help minimize aggression.
  • Care Requirements:
    • Water Parameters: They thrive in slightly acidic to neutral water with a pH of 6.0-7.0, a temperature range of 72-79°F (22-26°C), and soft to moderately hard water.
    • Diet: They are omnivores and can be fed a variety of flake foods, frozen foods like bloodworms and brine shrimp, and live foods like daphnia and mosquito larvae.
    • Tank Setup: A well-planted aquarium with plenty of hiding spots is ideal for these fish. They enjoy swimming in the middle and upper levels of the water column.

Compatibility:

Bolivian Rams can generally coexist peacefully with other peaceful community fish, such as:

  • Other Tetras: Neon Tetras, Glowlight Tetras, Rummynose Tetras, Black Skirt Tetras
  • Rasboras: Harlequin Rasboras, Scissortail Rasboras
  • Danios: Zebra Danios, Celestial Pearl Danios
  • Corydoras Catfish: Peppered Corydoras, Panda Corydoras
  • Dwarf Gouramis: Honey Gourami, Sparkling Gourami
  • Kuhlis Loaches
  • Otocinclus Catfish

Important Considerations:

  • Water Quality: Maintaining good water quality is crucial for their health and well-being. Regular water changes and proper filtration are essential.
  • Aggression: While generally peaceful, they can exhibit some territorial behavior, especially during breeding season. Keeping them in pairs or small groups and providing plenty of hiding spots can help minimize aggression.

By providing the right tank conditions and compatible tank mates, you can enjoy the vibrant beauty and peaceful presence of Bolivian Rams in your aquarium.
