Yellow Pigeon Blood Discus

The Yellow Pigeon Blood Discus is a radiant and elegant variety known for its golden-yellow base coloration contrasted by delicate red-orange speckling across the body and fins. Its luminous appearance and smooth, almost metallic sheen give it a sunlit, ethereal quality in planted aquariums. As one of the more visually uplifting discus types, it brings warmth and vibrancy to any aquascape while retaining the graceful charm of the classic discus profile.

Care Information:

Behavior and Compatibility:
Gentle and social, Yellow Pigeon Blood Discus do best in peaceful communities and are happiest in groups of 5 or more. Ideal tankmates include Cardinal Tetras, Sterbai Corydoras, Dwarf Cichlids (like Apistogramma), and non-aggressive Angelfish. Avoid boisterous or fin-nipping species, which can stress them and dull their color.

Diet:
Omnivorous and highly responsive to a balanced, color-enhancing diet. Feed a variety of high-quality discus pellets, frozen prepared foods (such as beef heart blends or discus-specific frozen formulas), frozen bloodworms, blackworms, live brine shrimp, and spirulina-based flakes. Blanched vegetables like zucchini or spinach can be offered occasionally. Include foods rich in natural carotenoids (like astaxanthin) to bring out their yellow and orange highlights.

Water Parameters:
Soft, stable water with slightly acidic to neutral pH is essential:

  • pH: 6.0–7.0 (ideal: 6.4–6.8)

  • Temperature: 82–86°F (28–30°C)

  • Hardness: 1–8 dGH

  • Nitrates: <20 ppm (maintain with regular 25–30% weekly water changes)

Tank Setup:

  • Minimum Size: 55 gallons for a group of 5.

  • Decor: Use driftwood, leaf litter, and live plants (Amazon swords, Cryptocoryne, Java fern) to provide a natural, low-stress environment.

  • Filtration: Use a canister filter with gentle flow; avoid strong currents.

  • Substrate: Fine sand or bare-bottom setups to keep debris under control.

Special Requirements:

  • Color Enhancement: Soft lighting and a neutral or dark background can enhance their yellow tones.

  • Stability: Sensitive to fluctuations—ensure consistent water quality and avoid sudden changes.

  • Quarantine: Like all discus, they are vulnerable to stress-related illness; quarantine new arrivals and acclimate slowly.
